CHAPTER 17

HOLLY

“Hey, I know you’re busy, but Bevins wants you in his office as soon as you find a stopping point,” Rena said via intercom.

“Partner code for ‘get your ass in here now’,” I said with a grin, “What can I say? My advice is indispensable. He can’t wait.”

“If this is about which leather seats to get on his boat again…” Rena said, and I could practically hear her rolling her eyes.

“No, I don’t have any idea how a man who can’t make a simple decision like that rose to power in one of the most prominent law firms on the West Coast,” I said to her, saving my file and exiting the application. “I’ll be in his office. If something urgent happens, buzz me there.

“Thirty minutes, right?” Rena said.

“Yup.” My trusty assistant had standing instructions to buzz me and interrupt so I didn’t get stuck listening to one of Roger’s long, repetitive fishing stories. If it was a meeting about a case or something business related, she didn’t call me there, but if it was one of these ‘come to my office’ things, it meant he was bored. I tried not to smirk, knowing that he probably just woke up from a midday nap. “To tell you how pleased we are at Bevins Sinclair with your performance on our team. You’ve come a long way since you started.” He looked pleased with himself over this speech.

“Thank you,” I said. “It’s been a pleasure to learn from you and from Edward as well.”

“Ed and I were talking yesterday, and he brought up the Winters-Harlow settlement,” he chuckled.

“I was new,” I said with a self-deprecating grin. “I didn’t want to settle out of court. I wanted to kick ass. Make the plaintiff cry in front of the judge if possible.”

“That’s my girl,” he said fondly. “You were convinced that settling was the same as losing a case. I wasn’t sure you thought you could show your face around here if you didn’t take every case to court and win.”

“I still don’t like it,” I confessed playfully. “Settling feels like admitting you might not have a good enough case or enough skill to win in front of a judge.”

“Now, Holly, you know that litigation is costly and time-consuming. Most clients would rather have things like that over with. Come to an agreement, which has to
